Chapter Two Fund
You’ve heard it already. There’s a LOT going on at Phoenix this season. Even in the most trying times, we are endeavouring to continue to build and transform the future of classical music in Boston and around the world. We need your help to make it happen!
This year, through the Chapter Two Fund, we’re raising $100,000 to build the foundation for the future of Phoenix.
Joshua Weilerstein, Music Director
New Music Director
A hailed as bringing “together an international conductor with local roots and one of this areas's most dynamic ensembles” [CRB], Weilerstein’s tenure as Music Director blasts off with three concerts this season including his debut on January 22nd at the Artists for Humanity EpiCenter and our season finale on May 19th when he leads the orchestra in a chamber version of Gustav Mahler’s incredible Symphony No. 4.
Shalin Liu Performance Center - Rockport, MA
New Venues
In Season 8 Phoenix will present concerts in FOUR new venues ranging from the newly renovated Crystal Ballroom and the iconic Somerville Theater to the unforgettable seaside Shalin Liu Performance Center in Rockport, MA. We’ll also present two Phoenix Prime shows at the Artists for Humanity EpiCenter, an innovative performance space in the Fort Point neighborhood of Boston with a mission of providing under-resourced teens the keys to self-sufficiency through paid employment in art and design.
Jordan Hall at New England Conservatory
New Partners
Season 8 also sees the return of Phoenix to the alma mater of so many of our founders, musicians and, of course, our new Music Director: New England Conservatory. Highlighted by a Phoenix concert at NEC’s Jordan Hall on March 27th featuring Ludwig van Beethoven’s 7th Symphony, this new partnership will provide current NEC students with a variety of musical and administrative opportunities to gain professional experience working with Phoenix.
Jonathan Bailey Holland, Composer
New Music
The world premiere of Jonathan Bailey Holland’s new transcription of “Blind Tom” Wiggins’s Battle of Manassas that start off Season 8 is the start of a new initiative at Phoenix to commission more and more works by composers we know and love. Starting in 2022 - 2023 every Phoenix season will include two commissions for orchestra and two for chamber ensemble. One of these will be a commission awarded to a current or recent student at New England Conservatory, as part of the Phoenix-NEC partnership.
Phoenix’s Dark Show in 2019
New Shows
Last, but of COURSE not least, Season 8 has our most ambitious shows ever. THREE Prime shows, including two conducted by our new Music Director, featuring music by Aaron Copland, “Blind Tom” Wiggins, Gustav Mahler, Caroline Shaw, Igor Stravinsky, Derrick Skye, and so many others… All served up with that classic Phoenix atmosphere of drinks, friends, and good vibes all around. We can’t wait for you to see what we have in store this season!
